About me

Tai chi and qigong instructor

Nearly 30 years of experience as an instructor in the Internal Arts

I'm Jay Arana

It is essential to teach each person in a manner that aligns with their unique nature and learning style

I’m a 5th generation instructor in the Grand Master Sam Tam lineage, specialising in Yang family Tai Chi, Qigong and Yiquan/Standing meditation.

I have 28 years experience. Having moved from the United States to Spain, I’m fluent in English and speak functional Spanish, allowing me to offer classes to both expatriates and local residents.

I have trained in several different disciplines over the years including Baguazhang, Chen style Tai Chi, Sun style Tai Chi as well as Yang style sword/saber forms. As a multidisciplinary artist, I bring a unique perspective to my teachings using meditation, movement and mindfulness as a catalyst for creative inspiration and personal and artistic growth. I am excited to bring the wonderful teachings of Tai Chi, Qigong and Meditation to the Mijas area.

Learning from Masters: My Path to Becoming a Tai Chi and Qigong Instructor

I’m grateful to have studied for almost the last 3 decades under the direct guidance of Sifu Jeff Patterson, senior student of Grand Master Sam Tam. Sifu Jeff is a world class martial artist in many different disciplines as well as a successful author. Jeff has a profound appreciation for Tai Chi and has studied under esteemed masters such as Sifu Leonard Trigg, Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming, Sifu Gregory Fong, and Sifu Thomas Flannel. However, his most significant influence in Tai Chi training comes from Grand Master Sam Tam.

Sifu Jeff has given me an endless wealth of information passed down from generation to generation. These teachings have allowed me to always keep learning and growing, refining, and attain new levels of understanding which I can then continue to pass on to my students.

This lifelong training and mentorship have shaped not only my practice, but also my path as a Tai Chi instructor.

Water is fluid, soft, and yielding. But water will wear away rock, wich is rigid and cannot yield. As a rule, whatever is fluid, soft and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard. This is another paradox: what is soft is strong.
